Wire trio represent North West at U13 regional development tournament

After two days of intense competition at the U13 Regional Development Tournament, held at the Regional Performance Centre in Manchester, the North West team have finished a creditable fifth in the ten team national tournament.

Saturday saw the group stages, and after four competitive matches against teams from the East Midlands, South West, South East and West Midlands, the North West team were extremely unlucky to finish third in Pool A after a three way tie with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

With only two teams progressing to the final four, the North West team were left to battle it out for 5th to 10th places on the Sunday. However, with three more wins against the North East, Yorkshire and the South, the North West team were able to secure a very well deserved overall fifth place (6 - 1 record) in the tournament. The eventual winners of the tournament were the East region.

Cheshire Wire were represented in the North West team by U13 players James, Miguel and Zak and Coach Steve Welsh who was the Head Coach of the North West team. Congratulations to all three players on being selected to represent their region and to Steve on a fabulous coaching performance.

Cheshire Wire victorious in 2017 U14 Anthony Walker Tournament

Cheshire Wire U14s battled through six gruelling 40 minute matches to win the 2017 U14 Anthony Walker Tournament by beating Cheshire Phoenix 47 – 20 in the final in Liverpool.

The tournament was attended by five teams, namely Cheshire Phoenix , Cheshire Wire , Lancashire Spinners , Stockport Falcons , and the hosts Liverpool . After a round robin tournament, the semi-finals saw Cheshire Wire play against Liverpool and Cheshire Phoenix play against Lancashire Spinners. After the earlier match in the morning which saw Wire snatch a one point victory over Phoenix 23 – 22, it was expected that the afternoon’s contest would be a close encounter also but Wire had other thoughts and put together what can only be described as a dazzling performance of team basketball by those who witnesssed it.

Congratulations go to the whole team and to their coach, Lewis Halpin.

Warm up before the start of a busy day

Camp winners and coaches

The camp was held over three days and attracted over 40 participants per day ranging in age from 7 to 17. Congratulations to everyone involved in helping to make this another successful camp.

Achievement banners hoisted at Birchwood

As part of the clubs ongoing development, and as mentioned a few weeks ago, the club was in the process of having a series of banners printed to acknowledge the club’s outstanding competition achievements since it was established in 2013. Well, those banners have been printed and are now proudly adorning the main wall at the Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex, the home of Cheshire Wire Basketball Club. The club committee felt that it was important not to lose sight of how far the club had come in such a short space of time, to pay tribute to the hard work of previous club teams and to hopefully inspire all of our current teams to continue to strive for such honours. There are probably many clubs throughout the whole of England who would relish the opportunity to be able to display as many banners as this but may well never get the chance to do so. We should all be extremely proud of our club and its heritage.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Cheshire Wire Basketball Club would like to take the opportunity to wish all of the club’s players, coaches, volunteers, parents, spectators, partners and all of the opponents that we have battled with so far this season, a very merry christmas and a happy new year for 2017.

We all hope that Cheshire Wire Basketball club will continue to grow and prosper as we move forwards into 2017 and eventually, through all of our hard work, achieve the successes that we all hope for.

Merry Christmas from Cheshire Wire Basketball Club

New wall banners for Birchwood

As part of the ongoing development of our home court at Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex, the club was granted permission by the Head of Birchwood Community High School to hang some banners in the Sports Hall so that the venue would start to look a little more like home. With this in mind, the Club committee agreed that the first banners to be completed would be a series of achievement banners that would highlight the successes of the club to date since it was formed in 2013.

Consequently, eight banners (each one 8 ft x 4ft) have now been printed by local Warrington printer, Warrington Signs & Custom Vehicle Wraps, based in Howley, Warrington. Thanks to Mike and his team at Warrington Signs for doing such a great job.

As much as we would like to hang these banners immediately, they wont be adorning the walls of Birchwood Sports Hall until the week before Christmas.

The eight banners that have been printed represent the following major club achievements:

Under 15 Boys National League Runners up

Under 18 Men North Premier Champions
Under 18 Men National League Runners up

Under 15 Boys National League Third

Under 16 Boys North Premier Champions
Under 16 Boys National League Fourth
Under 16 Boys National Cup Champions

Under 16 Boys National League Runners up

Hopefully, it wont be too much longer before we have the opportunity to add to the collection and maybe, one day, even hang a National League Champions banner.
